Learn to Walk, Write, Dance and Draw at One Peace Labyrinth Workshop

San Francisco — San Francisco Public Library is excited to announce a three-day workshop in partnership with interdisciplinary artist Maia Scott to contribute to One Peace Labyrinth, a community-empowered art installation. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the ancient practice of walking a labyrinth and engage in various creative outlets such as writing, dancing and art-making. This event will take place from December 6–8 at the Main Library in Civic Center and is offered in partnership with the Museum of Craft & Design.

Dating back to at least 2000 BCE, labyrinths have been embraced by cultures worldwide. Unlike mazes, labyrinths guide individuals to the center and back out again, offering a serene and contemplative experience. Artist Maia Scott, who is also a certified labyrinth facilitator and arts educator, will lead participants through labyrinth-based meditative practices to foster creativity and a sense of peacefulness.

The workshop will feature different activities each day, focusing on movement, mindfulness, writing and art-making. On Friday, December 6, participants will engage in movement meditation, structured improv and mantra chanting. Saturday, December 7, will be dedicated to writing meditation, utilizing labyrinth-based prompts to inspire creativity. On Sunday, December 8, participants will have the opportunity to create art with the Museum of Craft & Design.

The workshop aims to provide a safe and inclusive space for everyone to explore their creativity and find inner peace. “Working with the labyrinth has taught me a lot about myself and my place in community culture and has helped me build and increase my sense of self-esteem and purpose as I learn more and more that everybody has the right to be seen, heard and belong,” said Scott.

Scott brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the workshop. She is dedicated to ensuring access and inclusion for all individuals in the arts. Scott earned an MFA from the California Institute of Integral Studies and holds degrees in Therapeutic Recreation and Dance.

Don't miss this free, unique community art-making opportunity. All ages, experience levels and abilities are welcome. Children under 14 must attend with an adult. For more information, visit sfpl.org.
