Often called a "hidden gem," Candlestick Point State Recreation Area is a tapestry of grassy uplands, intertidal mudflats, and pocket beaches. It was established as California’s first urban park after many years of community organizing by Bayview Hunters Point residents who reclaimed the land from junkyards that covered the shoreline. Park Manager Lisa Whitmer will discuss how both community engagement and ecological restoration work continue at Candlestick Point.
Before becoming the Park Manager at Candlestick Point, Lisa Whitmer led the Adult Education department at the New York Botanical Garden, managed K-12 robotics and video game programs with Vision, Education, & Media, and taught U.S. History at Aragon High School in San Mateo. A lover of wildflowers and hot springs, Lisa spends as much time outdoors as she can.
