What We Do
Mobile Outreach brings the library to you!
We connect with SF residents where they work, play, create, learn and live. Our team serves people of all ages and abilities throughout the City of San Francisco regardless of physical, economic, social, geographic or other barriers.
Mobile Outreach librarians curate a variety of diverse library materials for the communities we visit, and our librarians provide fun and engaging programs.
We can be found at schools, early learning centers, senior residences and community day centers.
We serve as Treasure Island's only library service. You may also see us at community and cultural events happening year-round.
What We Offer and Where to Find Us
We bring library service to schools, parks, street festivals, and many other special and seasonal events for youth and families. You will often spot us in the YouthMobile, the newest member of the Library’s bookmobile fleet and the only bookmobile focused on kids.
Join us in the park for Swing Into Stories! In partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks, we offer children’s bookmobile service and outdoor storytimes in the park. See our schedule and locations.
The children’s librarian brings storytimes and library service tailored to preschools, childcare centers and elementary schools. Interested in becoming a regular stop on our YouthMobile route? Contact us.
Our TechMobile librarian leads a variety of STEM programs and classes that engage with emerging technologies in a fun and instructive way. We provide youth with the digital technology skills, tools and knowledge to be competitive in the 21st century. Our partners include schools, city agencies, and community-based organizations. Find out how to book our STEM librarian.
Library on Wheels
We partner with senior residences, day centers for older adults and hospitals like the VA and Laguna Honda to bring library services curbside to aging adults. Our librarian curates a diverse collection of library materials and provides reference assistance. Onboard patrons can also get library cards, request materials for future pick up and return books. Interested in having the Library on Wheels come to your location? Contact our Library on Wheels librarian with questions about our services, suggestions or to request a stop.
The only Library service available on Treasure Island, we offer materials for all ages. Come visit us.

Are you planning a community event like a backpack giveaway or a health fair? Want to make sure your community has access to getting a library card and checking out library materials at your street fair? Contact us.
Brightly clad in yellow and purple, you can’t miss the Library on Wheels, our bookmobile dedicated to serving older adults. The rear of the vehicle sports a Braun Millennium Series lift to make the bookmobile accessible to those in wheelchairs or with walkers. The welcoming interior begs you to stay awhile to browse the books, movies, and music and even includes a small tribute to the history of bookmobiles in San Francisco. Hop on board at one of our 30 sites and marvel at the quaint library setting within a bus while our old timey radio plays a familiar tune.
Our Green Bookmobile is actually not the color green! It represents the library’s commitment to putting green ideas into action. This environmentally conscious vehicle was the first in our fleet to run on 20 percent biodiesel and come equipped with features such as solar panels, specially designed vents to create natural air-conditioning, and a hybrid generator. The Green Bookmobile is also our vehicle that gets the closest to a branch library experience. Onboard, patrons will discover a vibrant collection of library materials for all ages and interests. Look for “the Green” on Treasure Island and civic and community events.
The TechMobile is our roving computer lab, bringing opportunities to play and learn with technology all around San Francisco. Some of the tech equipment and tools you could encounter onboard this member of our bookmobile family: Arduinos, LEGO robotics, Silhouette Cameo, Raspberry Pi, 3-D Printers, telescopes, and more! It also carries a small, curated collection of materials for teens.
The newest member of the library’s bookmobile fleet, the YouthMobile is the city’s only bookmobile focused on children.
The YouthMobile visits schools, preschools, childcare centers, street festivals, and many other special and seasonal events. On Tuesdays, you may spot the 26-foot truck at one of our public parks, offering mobile library service and librarian-led storytimes in our popular Swing Into Stories program.
On board, we have a diverse array of library materials for children from babies to school-age kids.
When you leave, see if you can spot any of the following icons of San Francisco on the outside of the YouthMobile:
